Ever since the #amalgamation, #Toronto has its own culture clash, pitting suburbanites vs downtown core hipsters on issues such as social housing and public transportation. It is therefore useful to see how this culture clash plays South of the border.

Social Housing, otherwise known as subsidized housing or TCHC projects is a subject fraught with controversy. Conversely, the news of “upgrading” such apartments at Jane and Finch will be met with various degrees of approval in our community.

The major news of the week is the closing of a housing project at Jane and Finch.

Toronto Community Housing Corp. alleges two former executives oversaw the filing of more than $1 million in fabricated costs in connection with reconstruction work after a fire at 200 Wellesley St. E. That’s according to statements of defence filed by the city-owned social housing agency Monday in Superior Court, in response to lawsuits launched by Lou Canton and Roman Mesec alleging they were wrongfully dismissed. TCHC assigned the pair to work at its for-profit subsidiary, Housing Services Inc., in 2007. In 2010, they had responsibility for overseeing HSI’s role in the reconstruction of the TCHC apartment building at 200 Wellesley after a fire displaced many of its 1,200 residents for weeks. .

Residents were left guessing what may have affected the water taste in the past couple of days and the government is looking to change the landlord and tenant act with a view to improve landlord protection.

We have recently learned about a teen shot dead outside a housing complex at Shoreham Ct. The shooting took place in front of a Toronto Community Housing complex on Shoreham Court near Jane Street at around 11:50 a.m. Police say their preliminary invetigation suggests that the shooter or shooters fired on the victim over a fence before fleeing the scene. The victim was taken to hospital by someone other than paramedics but was pronounced dead a short time later. Police initially said that a young child had been shot, however they later corrected themselves and said that the victim is 17. A boy fell from the eighth floor while at a party and is currently in hospital on July 2, shortly before 7pm.

A seemingly motley crew from York University's Osgoode Law School is canvassing the Jane and Finch area to increase voter participation.

Among urban policy-focused academics, few issues today are as distressing and contentious as gentrification. Much of the focus in public debate has been on the newly upscale neighborhoods in major U.S. cities, like New York’s Chelsea, East Village, or Williamsburg; San Francisco’s Portero Hill and Mission District; Chicago’s Wicker Park; or Boston’s South End.

After such a tragedy , where people died or were forcibly evacuated, it is only natural to inquire how could this happen and whose fault was it. As details are starting to emerge, it becomes clearer and clearer that government idiocy and lack of foresight have played an important role in the tragedy.
